Heather Ridge is the golf-course neighborhood north-west of Meadowood along Iliff Avenue, and much of its housing is townhomes and condos, where electric heat and heat pump repair comes up as often as gas furnace work.
The first Heather Ridge filings date from 1970 to 1972, followed by Heather Ridge South from 1973 to 1981, Willowridge from 1979 and Danbury Park and The Chateaux at Aurora Park in the 1990s. Iliff Avenue, Yale Avenue and Peoria Street are the main roads, with Jewell Avenue, Asbury Drive, Potomac Street and Xanadu Way inside the neighborhood.
The Golf Club at Heather Ridge
The neighborhood is built around The Golf Club at Heather Ridge, which ran as a private club for about 30 years before the surrounding homeowners bought it and opened it to the public in 2010 (Heather Ridge golf club). Heather Gardens is next door to the south and Iliff Station to the east. Cherry Creek Dam, built from 1948 to 1950, holds the reservoir a short drive south-west (Cherry Creek Dam history).
Attached Homes and Their Heating Systems
In the Census tract covering the western part of Heather Ridge, only about a fifth of homes are detached houses; about half are townhomes and the rest are condos and apartments (Heather Ridge tract data). The median build year there is 1979. In the tract to the east, most homes are in multi-unit buildings and the median year built is 1982.
Gas heats about two thirds of homes in both tracts and electricity about a third. Condo and townhome units in Heather Ridge use a mix of small closet furnaces, electric furnaces and heat pumps. Equipment in attached units is packed into tight spaces, and vent pipes and condensate lines often run long distances to reach an outside wall. Older electric furnaces in these units fail at their heating elements, sequencers and blower motors.
